Children’s Book Giveaway: Book! Book! Book!
August 24, 2010

Book! Book! Book!, written by Deborah Bruss and illustrated by Tiphanie Beeke, is one of a kind.  The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who find themselves bored when the children return to school.  Together, they march down the road until they happen upon the public library.  And after a series of communication problems – namely, the fact that the library cannot understand whinnies or moos – the librarian helps them find a few books.  No longer bored, the animals spend the rest of the day reading together on the farm.

One of a kind, right?

The story is simple and clever and is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the joys of reading and visiting the library, but I am particularly smitten with Beeke’s artwork.  The illustrations in Book! Book! Book! are not only vibrant, they are fun and lovely.  Honestly, they’re the sort of illustrations that I would hang up on my walls.

Pros: This book is nothing but pros.  There are books!  A library!  Animals!  Children!  And, best of all, READING!

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Buy.

Reading Tip: I cannot say this enough: TAKE YOUR KID TO THE LIBRARY.  Go to story-time.  Fall in love with a book.  Have a good time.  If your child is reluctant, try asking them to illustrate or write about a trip to the library.  Or allow them to invite a friend to tag along.  Or grab a special snack on the way to share at home over new stories.

What to do: You can enter this giveaway by leaving a comment below or sending me an e-mail answering this question: how often do you go to the library?  All you need is an e-mail address.  The giveaway ends Sunday evening at 9 P.M. Pacific Time and the winners will be announced next Tuesday morning.  You can leave one entry every day, for a total of up to six entries.

For extra entries: This is on the honor system, so please be honest.  I will award you one extra entry if you vote for me at Top Baby Blogs by clicking here.  Each day you vote, I will award you one additional entry.  I am hoping to maintain or move into a spot in the top ten on both sites so that we can slowly begin to reach more parents about the joys and importance of reading with children.

To purchase this book: You can buy Book! Book! Book! through Amazon.com (that link uses my affiliate code) or locate a local retailer through Indie Bound.org.

An announcement: The winners of last week’s books were Jessica, Jennifer W, Lisa, and Anna J.  Keep your eyes out for e-mails, ladies!

I used to be a second grade teacher, so we do A LOT of reading in our house!!!  We go to the public library once a week (and my LO is only 5 months old) :-)

  4. By Amber on August 24, 2010

Everyone in our house is obsessed with reading, including our 12 mo old Nate. We go to the library a few times a month. They have terrific free classes there, including baby sign language and song time. We love it there!

  5. By Monica on August 24, 2010

We go about twice a month and we love it! :)

  6. By Stephanie @ Confessions of a Trophy Wife on August 24, 2010

Personally, I’m at the library at least once a week.  I always take DS with me.  We have yet to attend a story time (he’s 5 months old), but hope to start soon!  My mom always took my sibs and I to the library at least once a week to get books and we also attended storytimes.  It definitely impacted my love of the library as well as my love of books!  I really hope to pass that on to my son.

Thanks for the chance to win!

I’m a grad student, so I live at the library.  Now that I have a little one, though, I will begin taking her to story time this fall at the local public library.  Can’t wait!

I had forgotten about this book!  I love it too!  I think my copy must have gotten left at the preschool.
I voted yesterday for you on top baby blogs and top mommy blogs and just did it again right now.  Is that 3 entries?

we go at least once every 2 weeks - more when the weather is miserable.  And of course Eloise’s personal library gets visited every day.

  17. By on August 24, 2010

I go to the library about once a week or more.

  18. By Heidi on August 24, 2010

What a cool book!  I love books.  :)

We got to the library once a week - and I liked Lauren’s comment about going to our personal library; that happens many, many times a day!

  19. By Sarah S on August 24, 2010

Now that the kids are in preschool we only go to the library once a week. My daughter is starting kindergarten this year and she is so excited about the library in the school! It has all kids books! It’s huge! For me, it’s so fun to see her excited about that.

  20. By on August 24, 2010

I have a hard time lending books from the library because I fall in love with them and have to own them.  I have boxes and boxes of books in the garage that won’t fit on my two bookshelves but anytime I try to get rid of them I can’t do it.

  21. By Jill on August 24, 2010

When I’m not working, we go once a week.  When I’m working (in a school), I go daily.  School libraries are sanctuaries for tired teachers!

  22. By Christy on August 24, 2010

I feel terrible about this but we just moved to town and we haven’t been to the library yet.  I was telling my hubby yesterday that we need to go to story time soon.

  23. By Lindsey on August 24, 2010

We rarely keep books the entire time the library allots.  We’re going about every week!

  24. By on August 24, 2010

We go to the library about every two weeks.  The kids love exploring!

  25. By Mary @ Parenthood on August 24, 2010

I voted!  We’re so excited that our library is opening again for reading programs (it’s been a request only system for about a year while our local branch was renovated).

But Elizabeth has meanwhile aged out of the baby program and into the toddler program.  How DID this happen?

  26. By ...and baby makes five! on August 24, 2010

We go at least once a week, but have been known to go up to three times per week!

  27. By on August 24, 2010

We usually get to the library a couple times a month but our local branch is closed for renovations…so for now I have to browse online, request books and pick up at a local community center.

    I voted at both sites.

  28. By Jennifer W on August 24, 2010

I actually don’t go to the library. I know I should, but I’m horrible at returning books. I do, however, go to used books stores. I heart them. :)

  29. By Molly on August 24, 2010

I go to the library every day, which I suppose is cheating because I’m a librarian.  When I was a kid, though, we went every week without fail.  I love when families come in regularly—we get to know all them very well over the years, and it’s great to see.

Keep up the good work with this site—I think you’re promoting some great ideas about literacy, and I voted for you!

  30. By Lyndsey on August 24, 2010

We go once a week…after summer is over, more hopefully….I want to go to the story-time

  31. By Mailis on August 24, 2010

This book looks great! :) I love the illustrations.

We have not ventured to the library yet, as Jude refuses to be quiet or sit still. 2 things that are generally frowned uopn at the library. ;) However, I can’t wait to take him when he is a bit older and understands WHY one must not scream at the top of his lungs at the library.

I voted at Top Baby Blogs.:)
(and I’m going to search out an older link for Top Mommy Blogs, too…since you didn’t include one here.

well, i’m a librarian, so i’m there quite a lot!  but i have to say that even when i’m not working - traveling or days off - i seem to find my way into other libraries!

  33. By on August 25, 2010

I have a question about reading to babies. My son is almost 10 months old and I still haven’t brought him to the library. I’ve been trying to read to him since he was a few weeks old. That may have backfired, because all he wants to do now is turn the pages. He doesn’t bother looking at what’s on the page, he just wants to flip flip flip….. I try to slow him down so I can read what’s on the page but he just loses interest.

Any suggestions on how I can get him to slow down and enjoy books the way they were meant to be?

  34. By on August 25, 2010

I voted once… and I don’t ever go to the library because there are none where I live :( (Central America)  That is why I’m building my home library for our first little one who will arrive in January.  I loved going to the library when I was a kid!

  35. By on August 25, 2010

E and I go to the library at least once a week. He turned one in May so we were able to join their “movers and groovers” story-time this summer. Now the librarians know his name…I love it!

voted for you again today on both!!  I can’t believe how dedicated I am to getting a free book, I usually would just go buy them!  I guess the lack of money flow is starting to sink in after a year as a stay at home mom ;).
    Nice seeing you today.

I am gonna have to start entering these, I am 6 weeks pregnant!  Yay!

From when I was very small, I always attended the library every Saturday morning.  When I was at college I got a Saturday job working at my local library.  Recently I have not attended all that much, but when little bean arrives I will be heading there at every opportunity!

I’d say we go 3-4 times a month. Looking forward to going more soon! The library was my favorite place growing up! Magical!
