Children’s Book Giveaway: How Do I Love You?
October 12, 2010

How Do I Love You?, written by Marion Dane Bauer and illustrated by Caroline Jayne Church, is one of the first books that entered our home when Charlotte was an infant.  And today, it is one of the only books that I still love as much as my daughter does.  We literally read this book every day.

Now, let’s take a moment and have a moment of truth here.  I love books.  I love reading.  And I especially love reading books to my kid.  HOWEVER, there are instances – usually after I have read a particular book approximately seven billion times in a row – when I think my brain might actually turn to mush if I so much as lay eyes on that book’s cover.

So sometimes, when my daughter is busy (ever so busy, as only a toddler can be) doing something Very Important like, say, terrorizing the dog?  I hide a book or twenty.

How Do I Love You? is not and never has been one of those books, although it is one of the most-read books in our home.  And if that isn’t a solid product endorsement, I don’t know what is.

In all honesty, I think that How Do I Love You? is so much fun for our family because it’s sweet.  It is aimed at a younger audience – the pages are thicker and the cover is padded – and it is all about love.  I don’t know about you, but telling my child that I love her is one of my favorite things to do.

No wonder I adore this book.

Furthermore, the illustrations are vibrant and engaging.  The colors are beautiful and the little girl in the book has a stuffed bunny toy that appears on every spread, which small children love to point out.  As well, the rhyme is simple and lyrical.  I find that I often sing rhyming books to my daughter; singing holds her attention better and can be more fun for me.  So I always appreciate a poem that, like this one, can be easily sung.

Overall, I just think How Do I Love You? is a wonderfully cute book.  It has become one of my favorite gifts for baby showers and toddler birthdays and considering how often we read it, it is nothing short of a miracle that I still love it so.

Pros: This book is nothing but pros: bright colors, cute illustrations, catchy rhyme, fun to read, important topic, adorable poem, WHAT ELSE COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT?

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Buy.  This is definitely a book that I think any child would enjoy.

What to do: You can enter this giveaway by leaving a comment below or sending me an e-mail answering this: who is the last person you told you loved?  All you need is an e-mail address.  The giveaway ends Sunday evening at 9 P.M. Pacific Time and the winners will be announced next Tuesday morning.  You can leave one entry every day, for a total of up to six entries.

For extra entries: This is on the honor system, so please be honest.  I will award you one extra entry if you vote for me at Top Baby Blogs by clicking here.  Each day you vote, I will award you one additional entry.  I am hoping to move into the top ten so that we can slowly begin to reach more parents about the joys and importance of reading with children.

To purchase this book: You can buy How Do I Love You? through Amazon.com (that link uses my affiliate code) or locate a local retailer through Indie Bound.org.

An announcement: The winner of last week’s book series giveaway was Ellie.  Congratulations, Ellie!

I’ve been eyeing that book for a while. I have an 17 month old son and we have “I Love You Through and Through” by the same author. We love it!! It’s the only book my little one will sit and read EVERY time.

We also own “I Love You Through and Through” and my little love laughs every time we get to the part that reads, “I love your giggles.“ He just thinks the word giggles is hilarious, ironically.

This morning I told my hubby I love you as he got up early, dressed and left for work, taking care to leave the bedroom as dark and comfy as possible since preggo me didn’t come to bed till 2 a.m., then was summoned by said little love fifteen minutes later to sit with him as he went back to sleep. Thank you, hubby, for letting me sleep in!

  30. By on October 12, 2010

after the baby was tuckked in the bed snuggled against her dads chest. I kissed them both and told them I loved them. I love to see the cuddle. It makes my heart warn! (btw, it’s been a while since I’ve been able to comment, but I read as often as life will let me!)

  31. By Mary @ Parenthood on October 12, 2010

    Voted for you.

The last person I told I loved was my daughter - repeating this over and over and over is part of our bedtime routine.  We read the same book every night - “I love you best, I love you most, I love you high, I love you low, I love you deep, I love you wide, I love you THIS much”.  Actually I rarely have the book out - we just recite it in the dark…

About to tell my husband I love him when we head to bed in a few minutes :P

  32. By on October 12, 2010

    Definitely voted for you!

Sounds like such a sweet book!  Just an hour ago I told my sweet toddlers how much I love them before saying good night.  And soon I will tell my awesome husband the same.  Love your blog!
