Children’s Book Giveaway: The Smallest Snowflake.
January 11, 2011

Since we are all knee-deep in winter – and for many of you that means being knee-deep in snow – I thought that The Smallest Snowflake might be the perfect sort of book to showcase today.

The Smallest Snowflake, written and exquisitely illustrated by Bernadette Watts, is a story about a tiny snowflake who floats all around the world before finally finding the perfect place for her.  Other snowflakes settle on majestic mountaintops and in silent forests and near igloos, but the smallest snowflake holds out until she finds a cottage that, to her, is the most beautiful home she could imagine.

Just before bed last night.  Every time she saw a picture of a bird, she said CAW CAW CAW!

Watts is one of my favorite illustrators.  There is something warm and cozy about her artwork; it always makes me smile.  It isn’t edgy or vivid, but there is something familiar and comfortable about it, some quality that reminds me of my own childhood.  So naturally I love the art within The Smallest Snowflake.

More than that, though, I just love the story.  I love the idea of each snowflake having a special spot and I love the idea of the smallest snowflake searching until she finds the place for her.  It may not be a book with a lesson or a book with bright colors, but it is one of the best-loved books in our home because there’s something…HAPPY…about it.

What to do: You can enter this giveaway by leaving a comment below or sending me an e-mail answering this: if you could pick any one place in the world to be, where would you choose?  All you need is an e-mail address.  The giveaway ends Sunday evening at 9 P.M. Pacific Time.  You can leave one entry every day, for a total of up to six entries.

To purchase this book: You can buy The Smallest Snowflake through Amazon.com (that link uses my affiliate code) or locate a local retailer through Indie Bound.org.

I’d pick home. Of course an ocean and some warm weather would be great, but ultimately my favorite place is at home with my husband and baby girl.

Right now I would choose Antarctica. It’s beautiful and peaceful. And there are no bugs!

I love home. I live in Brooklyn with my 2.5 month old son and husband. However, my husband is a musician and travels a lot. He is in Boston right now and I think I’d most like to travel to Boston with my son and join my husband. Home is where the heart is!

I would love to live somewhere tropic like Hawaii. I love Kansas and it will always be home to me. But the extreme winters to extreme summers are getting old. We can’t go anywhere today because the roads are snow packed :(

If I could pick anywhere in the world to live it would be anywhere that has the seasons and it would have to be a quiet place…with no hustle bustle of the city life…I miss Spring and seeing the wildflowers bloom.  I miss Autumn and picking apples and seeing the pumpkin patches.  I miss Winter and the cold weather and snow.  I live in a sandcastle in a desert far, far away and I live through 8 months of summer!  LOL and the place would have to have rain!  I miss the rain! :)

Anywhere I could be with my family. Two of my kids are away…College and Grad school.  Not enough time during the holidays to be with them.

We honeymooned in Aruba, so that’s where I’d have to say.  Not only was it a fabulous vacation with my hubby, but the weather is perfect imho (89’ and breezy pretty much every day), it’s small and cozy, and Hannah would love the beach and the ocean.

Somewhere warm and cozy with my husband and children….or maybe playing outside in the warm sunshine!  Dreaming of sunshine and warm days right now since it’s freezing cold and raining out.

I would pick where I was this morning. Snuggled tight with my son, rocking him to sleep, watching the snow outside my window slowly melt away.

voted for you on both sites today, not sure if that counts or not.

If I could pick anywhere in the world to be it could be anywhere, but being there would be like being on a true vacation (no email, no deadlines, no bring-along work, worries and stresses all on hold, ...).  Hmmmm, maybe it’s more of a place in the mind than a place in the world.  Wonder if it really exists?

  27. By Lindsey on January 12, 2011

Right now I’d love to be exactly where I am.  Cuddled up in my comfy clothes and warm bed.  The house is clean, the kids are snoozing and my husband will be home very soon.

Entry 2: I would love to be in my daughter’s room, playing with her on the floor. Books and stuffed animals scattered all over. Nothing fancy, just pure simplicity; one of my favorite places to be and things to do!

Is it silly to say that I want to stay right where I am. Life is so good, why would I want to be anywhere else:).

Tonight, I wouldn’t wish to be anywhere but home where my heart is.

  36. By on January 14, 2011

As with my first post, I want to be somewhere warm. Staying cooped up inside with a toddler is about to make my head explode. I want a beach with sand and sun. I want “cold” to mean a high 50 that day not 7. Most of all I just want to take my son to play outside in the sun.

  37. By on January 15, 2011

There are so many famous cities I have never visited; Geneva, Switzerland sits high on my list!  I’d like to be there right now!

Entry 3: (I hope I win ... this looks like an adorable book!)
I would choose to be in a cabin along Lake Superior in Duluth, MN - one of the most relaxing and scenic vacations you can take!

I know this contest is over, but I did want to say this. It’s a great book! We just got it for our iPad and the kids love it. You can get the ebook version and it’s a decent price. Well worth it for young ones.

Yep, the precious years of life. It does make me wish I had of kept a few of these books around so that my kids can let their kids hear them. Keep the print!
