Our summer.
June 23, 2011

We’ve been filling our summer with hikes in the local canyons, waiting until we cannot see a single person, then whooping at the top of our lungs.  It feels powerful.  And we’ve been filling our summer with chalk drawings scattered across the back patio, illustrations of camels and unicorns and carrots.  She scribbles lines together and calls them happy-faces.  It feels relaxing.

We’ve been filling our summer with trips to the beach, shoving our toes in the hot sand as the roar of the waves deafens us.  It feels lazy.  And we’ve been filling our summer with pushing seeds in the dark Earth, watering them and watching them come to life and push up from the ground.  It feels satisfying.

We’ve been filling our summer with nursery rhymes and sufi poetry, rehearsing words and tunes until we get them right.  She anticipates my words, calls them out in her sing-songy voice.  It feels comfortable.  And we’ve been filling our summer with friends, talking and laughing and playing together.  It feels happy.

Her Dypeas pocket diaper is too small now, but she insists on wearing it anyways =)

Most of all, we’ve been filling our summer with paint.  With colors swirling and brushes swishing and sponges splotching.  With ‘PEAS, MAW-MAW? PAINT, MAW-MAW?’ and ‘LOOK! ART!’ and masterpieces hanging on the kitchen walls.

It feels just right.

What have you been filling your summer with?

I love your photo - so sweet! I can’t wait until my little one is old enough to create some pretty art for my walls. And as far as voting - what owl? I think I’m missing it!

I am in love with that diaper. How cool is that pattern?

Ours have been filled with much of the same. Playing in water, bike riding at the beach, tons of painting and other fun activities. So much fun!

    (and I voted for you)

Love it! And I voted, or at least I think I did. I clicked the owl, it went to the tbb website.

What a stunning picture!  Paint outdoors with the little ones and a dip in the baby pool afterwards sounds perfect, and means less to clean up.  Thank you for sparking the idea :)

Anything outside - my son would spend 24/7 outside if he could. Lots of trips to the zoo and our community’s childrens garden, walks around the neighborhood, exploring our yard, playing with/in water and trips to the playground!

Now that I’m getting back into making painting (myself) a priority, my son’s started waking up early so that he can join me. It’s one of my favorite parts of the day! :-)

That’s such a great picture! We’ve been playing in the backyard in the kiddie pool, going for long runs in the stroller, and spending some serious time playing in sandy playgrounds. I love summer!

Gorgeous pics! My son, Knight, is just 7 months. While everything is new for him, figuring out how to do anything and everything with a 7-month-old is new for me. We have mastered going for long walks in the stroller-all the way to the beach, in fact. We wander around festivals, book fairs, and farmer’s markets- Knight in his Ergo. We meet friends for picnics. Gardening is a bit trickier, but we are working on it. We also haven’t been hiking with the dogs nearly as much as any of us would like. Baby steps.

We have been doing a lot of painting as well! Love this photo and the adorable diaper ... the boy ones just aren’t always as cute! :-)

We have been outside, outside, outside. See our wheelbarrow rides… http://www.wordplayhouse.com/2011/06/outdoor-activities-for-kids.html
Coming out of the harshest winter I remember here, we REALLY are appreciating this season.
