Dear Child,

I’ve gone back and forth about writing a letter to you and this is what I’ve decided: adoption is like pregnancy.  We don’t know you yet, but every moment that we wait for you, that we search for you, that we yearn for you, we love you more.  When we did not yet know your sister Charlotte, we loved her too and we wrote letters to her.

This is the first letter that we are writing to you.  I promise, sweet child, that there are more to come.  One day when you are older, we will send you into the world with these letters and we will say: we loved you at the beginning and we will love you in the end.  We love you always.  No matter what you do, no matter what happens, no matter where you are, no matter who you choose to be: we love you always.

A few days ago your sister came to me out of the blue.  “Momma,” she said, “I want a brother.  Yeah.  Or a sister.  Yeah!  A BROTHER OR A SISTER, MOMMA!”  Of the three of us, there can be no doubt that it is your sister who most eagerly awaits your arrival.

Your father and I want nothing more than to look in your eyes and hold you close and watch you grow.  We know that you will enrich our lives and that our family will be better for your presence.  But your sister, your darling sister, (oh I can’t wait until you meet your sister!) can hardly contain her excitement.  She talks about you every day, tells people that you are coming, brags about the things you will do together, sets aside toys and books to share with you.

We’ve been talking to your sister quite a bit about what it means to be a family.  A family, we tell her, is knit together by love and not by biology.  There are relatives who go all their lives never truly knowing each other.  And there are strangers who come together and build something beautiful.

We hope, oh we hope, that we are able to give you something beautiful.

We love you more than bears love honey (and everybody knows that’s an awful lot),

    I’m excited to read what’s going on in the next weeks and months in your wonderful family. I hope that your dream will come true very soon and there will be a little brother or sister for Charlotte, and a new kid that gets all the love that Donald and you have in your hearts…

    This is so beautiful! Someday you’ll be able to share this with your sweet son or daughter and they will know just how deep your love is. I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time and never commented before now. My husband and I have no children of our own yet, but I know that whether or not we have biological babies, we will adopt someday. I hope that we can show the same love you are able to. :)

    Sarah, you bring tears to my eyes and love to my heart.  Any child will be lucky to be in your family, I know this.  Love is powerful, love is formed before you know your way.  I loved Bailey before she was conceived, I loved this new little one before he/ she was.  You are an amazing Mom, and your family is truly knit with love.

    Wonderful! Over 30 years ago I was as excited as your Charlotte about the prospect of my parents increasing our family by adoption, and I absolutely doted on the four year old brother who came into my life. Still one of the high points of my life, along with my marriage and the birth of my children.

    This is so amazingly sweet. Your son/daughter will cherish this letter forever knowing that his/her Momma. Daddy and Sister wanted them before they even knew them. Beautiful.

    Not much causes me to tear up, but this brought tears to my eyes. So sweet, so loving, so heartfelt. When you find your child, they will be so lucky.
