Two conversations with Charlotte of late.
July 06, 2012

On Tuesday morning, at the park, in demonstration of why it is unsafe to ever suggest ANYTHING to a toddler.  You show a little concern for a kid’s possessions and the next thing you know, you’re an advocate for teddy bear suffocation.

    -  Sweetheart, would you like me to tuck your teddy bear into your backpack?  His head is hanging out right now.
    -  No, Momma!  If his head is in my backpack, HE CANNOT BREATHE!  HE NEEDS TO BREATHE!  WHY DO YOU NOT WANT HIM TO BREATHE?  Don’t worry, Nounours (her teddy bear’s name).  I will take care of you in my backpack.  I want you to breathe.

Yesterday afternoon.  Against my better judgment, I let Charlotte drink a kefir pouch in the car on the way to her aunt’s home because she solemnly swore to me that she would not make a mess.  When we arrived, I was rather unsurprised to find that she had, in fact, made QUITE the mess.  In other news, WHEN DID I BECOME “MOM” and when did she start reassuring me?!?!

    -  Wow, Charlotte.  It looks like alot more of that kefir ended up on your car-seat than in your belly.
    -  Don’t worry, Mom.  It happens.
    -  (laughs) I’m not worried, sunshine.  Here, while I’m wiping down the car-seat, would you like to clean yourself up a little too?
    -  Okay.  (pauses)  It was a tasty pouch, Mom.  But sometimes when a little girl has a kefir pouch that is a little bit liquidy, she just spills it, Mom.  Yeah.  It happens.  Don’t worry.  Everybody spills.

I think my son was about 28 ish months when he suddenly started calling me mom instead. It really made me sad. I thought I would be mommy till he was at least 7! And now when he is exasperated with me, he says MOOOOOOMMMM! When did my two year old become a teenager!

A few days ago, I hit my head, hard, and started tearing up. My son came over (he’s 2), kissed my head, and said, “Aww, don’t worry, it will be all right”.  That kind of made me cry harder, just because it was such an unexpected kindness. When did our children grow up into thinking, feeling beings?  It amazes me every time.

Cutest backpack I’ve ever seen but it almost made me cry to see her with it on and headed away from you.  Probably it’s just a crying day for me.
    She is beautiful!

love it! My daughter started calling me “Sarah” instead of mommy lately and when she initially did it one day during a gathering, I asked her why to which she responded “well, I figured there were a lot of moms in the rooms so you might not know I meant you”. Ha! From a 5 year old! It’s hard to argue with that kind of logic. Kids are awesome.
