Yesterday afternoon, Donald and I attended a scheduled tour of the maternity ward where we will likely (hopefully) welcome this baby into the world. The tour was scheduled to run for two hours beginning at 1:30 P.M.
I spent the last few days agonizing over the tour. As any woman with the third trimester pooch will tell you, walking around on swollen feet for two hours is not very high on the what-I-want-to-do-today list. And besides, I wondered, WHAT could possibly take two hours? It’s a maternity ward, not a space shuttle launch. Don’t you basically pop your head in the labor and delivery room and OOH and AAH at all the fancy schmancy wires and then, you know, YOU’RE DONE?
Turns out that the hospital couldn’t find two hours worth of crap to fill the tour with either. It started late and lasted less than thirty minutes. MY FEET WERE VERY PLEASED.
A few hours, a SUCCESSFUL battle with the constipation gods, and a plate of nachos later, it occurred to me that touring the hospital was just the beginning. For the very first time, Donald and I are making decisions that could actually be termed PARENTING.
This is a strange concept to wrap my head around. Although I firmly believe that parenting begins at conception, we have only just reached the point where some of our choices relate solely to the well-being of our child. For the last eight months, we’ve considered my health as well. Now, it’s all baby all the time.
After dinner last night, Donald sat down next to me on the couch and pulled me up against his body. I told him that I’d been turning over this whole WE ARE PARENTS, HEAR US ROAR idea in my head the entire evening. And I swear to goodness, that man busted out the biggest grin I’ve ever seen. He placed his hand on my belly and I felt the baby inside of me move in response to his touch.
“I know,” he said. “ISN’T IT GREAT?”
Somebody said in the comments yesterday that good men are sexy, and that’s a fact. That somebody could not be more right. For the first time in this pregnancy, I feel like I am absolutely 100% READY to have this baby. All it took was spending ten minutes falling in love with my husband all over again. I have tried for hours to think of any experience in my life that even remotely compares to the emotional explosion that occurred when I heard in my husband’s voice – and not just his words – that he couldn’t wait for this baby.
I’m still drawing a blank.

Lindsey, I would love nothing more than to kick him in the balls, but instead I was just rude right back. In an alternate universe, when I’m allowed to do things like deliver swift kicks to the testicles at work and still maintain my job, I am totally going to pack metal into my shoes for the occasion.

Remember this post, remember your excitement, because unfortunately, there WILL be times when the baby is here that you two absolutely are not on the same page with one another, and it’ll be hard. It happens to every couple, and it’s normal, but it can still be heart-breaking to look at your partner and feel like you’re looking THROUGH them.
I don’t mean to be a downer though! This is such an exciting time in your life. Emotionally and mentally, I loved the last little bit of pregnancy, even if physically I sometimes just wanted to fall over and never get up again.

You have so many more emotional explosions to look forward to. When I woke my husband to tell him we needed to go to the hospital, he got up and started digging through the closet, put on a shirt, and asked me if that was a good one to wear to meet his daughter. Freakin’ melt my heart…

Yes, a good man is sexy but a father is even sexier. Just wait until your hubby holds your baby in his arms for the first time….your heart will literally swell up and then melt. There is nothing in the world more precious!!

As for a good man being sexy….that is true. But even sexier than that is a good father. When you see your hubby hold your child for the first time, your heart will literally swell up and then melt. There is nothing more precious or beautiful.

Ah yes the maternity ward tour. Ours was part of our 4 week childbirth class. I have to say I did find it comforting to tour the labor and delivery rooms as well as the regular rooms, nursery, etc. Having a visual of where I have to go on D-day as well as where my baby and I will be staying for a couple of nights was comforting. How they thought that tour would take 2 hours escapes me though!

Prepare to fall in love with your husband over and over again, especially once the baby comes! He’ll say something like “I can’t believe we created this. I love this baby more than anything.“, and you will feel your heart explode! I fall in deeper in love with my guy everyday (even when I want to punch him). You will also fall deeper in love with your baby everyday.

Just wait until you see him hold your baby. I swear, I fell more deeply in love with my husband than I ever thought I could have when I saw him hold and love our son.

Dude, I fall in love every time he puts on a tool belt. I don’t have a bun in the oven, but dang, my guy is ultra smooth with the power tools and home improvement projects. Nothing goes undone. Ever. I only have to mention something and it goes on his list and is usually finished between 24 hours and 2 weeks depending upon how complex it is. What in the world did i do to deserve this? DO NOT share this with anyone or I’ll have every woman on the planet romancing him, promising him all sorts of favors in efforts to lure him away…Good men are sexy.
