229 diaper changes down.  Lots to go.

Dear Charlotte,

You’ve been breathing air and using that air to scream in demand of milk and a clean ass for four weeks now.

Let me tell you what, kiddo.  Your head has become ENORMOUS during those four weeks.  Newborns, you will find, have a peculiar way of more resembling aliens and earthworms than actual people and you were no different.  Right out of the chute, you had a tiny little pin of a head with a bright red scrunched-up face.  But you were OUR little alien earthworm and we loved you.

In the past four weeks, though, you’ve really started to look quite baby-like.  In the mornings, you mimic the faces we make at you.  Your facial muscle control could really use some work, but it is SO UNBELIEVABLY CUTE to watch you try to stick out your tongue.  Furthermore, you are becoming more expressive.  I love to watch you when you are alert just before a nap because you will easily spend two hours yawning and grinning and just acting overall adorable.

And then there are faces like this that just make me laugh.  And swoon.

Also, you’ve been growing like a weed.  It’s not like your head just got larger on its own.  The rest of your body has grown a couple inches longer and chubbed up very well.  I can no longer fit the circle of my pointing finger and my thumb around your thigh.  Just a couple days ago, your father mentioned that you were about to sprout a new roll on the back of your neck.  Maybe twelve hours later, that new neck roll made its debut appearance.

And your cheeks?  Your father CANNOT stop kissing those cheeks.  They are so scrumptiously chubby that they both touch my breast when I am feeding you and are red from rubbing by the time you have drank your fill.

Speaking of your father, that man cannot get enough of you.  Last weekend, your grandparents leapt at the opportunity to baby-sit you while we ran some errands and cleaned the house.  Six hours later, we walked down the street to get you.

And even though we blamed it on me, on my total emotional meltdown because I MISSED MY BABY, WAH, the truth is that your father missed you too.  A few days later, when I hopped in the shower, he told me that he had some very important business to attend to while I lathered up.  What sort of business?, I asked.  And, Charlie, I KID YOU NOT, your father cocked his head at me like I was some sort of loon.

“Holding my baby,” he answered.  Like, DUH.

Your father and I are not the only ones who cannot get enough of you.  Your aunt and grandfather cancelled a backpacking trip in part because your aunt got hit with a bad bout of altitude sickness…and in part because going backpacking meant going FOUR. WHOLE. DAYS. without seeing you.

And in those four days, who knows?  You could become a completely different baby.  Half a pound heavier.  A quarter inch longer.  Heck, at the going rate of twelve hours per neck roll, you could have done more fattening up than a holiday hog.  WHAT IF THEY DIDN’T RECOGNIZE YOU ANYMORE?

She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named is pretty crazy about you too.  She loves to hold you, wants to hold you all the time, cannot stop with the holding of the child.  Watching her cradle you and smile at your smiles is one of the most endearing things I have ever seen.

This is my favorite image of you of all time.  THE CUTENESS WILL KILL ME!

It is phenomenal to watch someone so little make such a huge imprint in the hearts and lives of the people around you.  We all love you so very much, Charlotte, and NO MATTER WHAT, that is what I want you to know and remember.  We wish things like happiness and rainbows and magical fairy dust upon you, of course, but most of all, I just want you to know that you are very well loved.

Love,
Momma
(okay, and Daddy)

    Precious.  So precious.

    So happy for your happiness!

The last photo of Charlotte is also my favorite - she belongs on a magazine.  No, a billboard!  There should be a billboard dedicated to the cuteness that is Charlotte.

Do you ever get tired of hearing, “Congratulations”?

    Well, Congratulations!

Aw! She is adorable—don’t you just love the rolls of fat?! When else are rolls of fat so cute?

Glad Donald is enjoying her so very much.

And I love that you call her Charlie. That’s always been one of my favorite nicknames for a girl!

Oh the first couple of weeks and months are incredible!  I think it is impossible to leave my kiddos too!  I miss their smell and the hugs and everything.  And now, I still remember my little aliens and I miss those days.  Cherish each and every moment.  She is gorgeous!

I love the first picture of her. She looks like “Oh. Who? Me?“

I, too, love the first pic.  For some reason I can’t get the last pic to load completely!  Bummer.

You won’t BELIEVE how much bigger her head gets.  It’s incredible.  Really makes me believe that whole “4th trimester” theory—ya know, that babies really need 3 more months in the womb, and that’s why they come out all underdeveloped (neurologically at least), but because we walk upright they have to be born “early” or else they couldn’t fit through the pelvis.

Anyway, I’m super curious—are you sticking with the G diapers or using another cloth system?  Or gave up and went to sposies?  I hope you’ll do a post soon if you’re using some kind of cloth/reusable system!  (We use prefolds, fitteds, and PUL covers from Green Mountain Diapers.)

Rebecca - I’ll do a post soon, I promise!  I wanted to make sure I had at least a month under my belt of diapering before I made any claims about how it was going and then I figured I’d update every now and then as Charlotte grew and became more mobile and the diapers started to fit differently.

But to answer your question, in a nutshell (the post will elaborate), we’re using two cloth diaper systems.  We use the gDiapers in public - they cut down on our wet bag carriage, they flush easily (once you read the instructions, which we did not the first time around) (oops), etc etc etc.  And we use the Fuzzi Bunz at home, with the gDiapers as back-ups when I don’t finish the laundry.  Which is pretty much all the time.  She loves them both and we haven’t had any problems with either.

    Sigh.  she makes me happy.
