Children’s Book Giveaway: Bloom: A Little Book About Finding Love
June 22, 2010

The reason that this week’s book appealed to me is simple: I loved the artwork.  Maria Van Lieshout, the author and illustrator of Bloom: A Little Book About Finding Love is phenomenally creative.  The minute I first laid eyes on her illustrations, I was smitten.  They are simple, sweet, expressive, and generally perfect.

The text is also simple, sweet, and expressive.  The text is pink, which lends a whimsical feel to the book, and tells a story about a pig named Bloom who falls in (fickle) love with a passing butterfly because she thinks it is a flying flower.  Which, COME ON, HOW CUTE IS THAT?  How could you possibly dislike a story about a pig falling madly in love with a butterfly?

Of course, the butterfly does what butterflies do – flits about and flies away – leaving Bloom lost in a cloud of despair and entirely convinced that she will never love again…until her friend steps in and saves the day.

Bloom: A Little Book About Finding Love is an easy book to overlook.  It’s small and at first glance, its unconventional design can seem disorienting.  But to overlook it would be a shame.  Van Lieshout’s book is truly impressive and appeals to both children (who, in my experience, seem to particularly appreciate Bloom’s the-world-is-ending tantrum after the butterfly vanishes) and adults.  After all, children and adults alike can relate to the primary themes of the book: passionate, misplaced infatuation and steady, devoted friendship (and love).

“I love you,” whispered Bloom.

Pros: Everything about this book is a pro.

Cons: None.

Borrow or Buy: Borrow.  The thing is that Bloom is a bit capricious.  While that fits the feel of the book, I do think it waters down the message about the value of friendship.

What to do: You can enter this giveaway by leaving a comment below or sending me an e-mail answering this question: what do you love?  All you need is an e-mail address.  The giveaway ends Thursday evening at 9 P.M. Pacific Time and the winners will be announced Friday morning.  You can leave one entry every day, for a total of up to three entries.

For extra entries: This is on the honor system, so please be honest.  I will award you one extra entry if you vote for me at Top Mommy Blogs by clicking here or at Top Baby Blogs by clicking here.  Each day you vote, I will award you two additional entries.  Don’t forget to let me know!  I am hoping to maintain or move into a spot in the top ten on both sites so that we can slowly begin to reach more parents about the joys and importance of reading with children.  If we inspire just ONE parent to read to their kid today, it’s worth a vote or two, don’t you think?

To purchase this book: You can buy Bloom: A Little Book About Finding Love through (that link uses my affiliate code) or locate a local retailer through Indie
