A weekend morning.
September 20, 2010

It was late when I opened my eyes.  Sunlight was peeking in through the window and the smells of breakfast were wafting into the bedroom.  I closed my eyes and relished the peace.  In the trees outside, the birds were chirping their morning melodies.  In the kitchen, my husband was chattering away to the baby.

It’s hard to say which was more wonderful a sound.  It was perfect.

So I sat up in bed, stretched, yawned, and walked out to the kitchen.  Good morning, sweetheart, my husband said.  A kiss on the lips and a glass of water ready on the counter.  It was breakfast burrito morning and he was rolling out the tortilla dough, patting them into small cakes, flipping tortillas in the air.  Why didn’t you wake me up?, I said.  Because you were sleeping, he grinned.

From the living room, I heard the squeal of my happy baby.  When I peeked around the corner, she was in the arms of her grandmother, reading story after story, pointing at animals and making noises.  They were smiling together.  Is this a glimpse, I wondered, of what my husband’s childhood looked like?  A glimpse of how he came to be the man I love?  It was perfect.

We had a bowl of eggs from the neighbor’s chickens, laid the day before.  And while my husband worked the tortillas – dividing the dough and adding some flour and mumbling about possibly making a tortilla press – I cracked eggs.  We grated cheese.  Poured milk.  Chopped tomatoes.  Washed and peeled potatoes.  And soon breakfast was ready.

Just wait, I said to my mother-in-law as we sat down to breakfast, as we folded our meals into rectangles and brought them to our mouths.  These tortillas are the tastiest you’ll ever had.

And they were.

It was perfect.

What was the happiest part of your weekend?

The happiest part of my weekend was seeing my 10-month old son finally playing and interacting with his 21-month old twin cousins. He was giggling at them and crawling after them and using their clothes to help him stand up next to them…. It brought a small glimpse into what the future will hold: The three musketeers playing together and being inseparable.

Even better yet, the next day when we asked my son where his cousins were, he crawled over to his photo book and opened to the page with their photo, and gently rubbed his finger on their faces.

    SO CUTE!!!!!

This weekend my husband and I were sitting on the sofa just watching TV and the baby was having an in-utero dance party. Without saying anything I put my husband’s hand where the baby was moving. It was the first time he could feel the baby moving and every time he could he would giggle. Sweetest thing I have ever heard! Made me love him so much more :)

The best part of my weekend was popping the baby in the sling and wandering through the local farmers’ market.  It was a beautiful, crisp, early-fall-feeling day, the tables were piled with beautifully colored vegetables, my husband and I were laughing and talking, and there was homemade butter pecan ice cream to be had.

Later on, we had a cookout at a friend’s house, and that was likewise the best.

I just had a really awesome weekend. :D

the whole darn thing!  I met up with a group of women who all came to know each other through an infertility online support group.  We all live in different states / places…but this is the FOURTH year that we have put aside a weekend to travel and be together.  This year it was on Long Island in wine country.  Beautiful weather, amazing women / friends, gorgeous surroundings…who could ask for more?  And, my Peanut got to have a special daddy-daughter weekend filled with a major league baseball game AND tea parties.  PERFECTION!

That is such a sweet picture :) The happiest part of my weekend was finally seeing Nate (13 months) overcome his frustration and struggles and finally master walking! In a blink of an eye he went from 2 to 3 steps at a time to wobbling across the entire room at super speed. So exciting!

Thank you for painting such an adorable picture. I loved this.

And since you asked, my weekend was awesome. My sister and her boyfriend came to visit from South Carolina. My youngest sister lives up the road from me, which meant all of us were together for the weekend. We did the beach, Joe cooked an enormous dinner (inspired by all the great foods of Buffalo) and then we walked to get ice cream at my favorite little neighborhood ice cream shop. Pretty much, I laughed hysterically all weekend. My sister and her boyfriend are very funny.
