Almost three.
March 20, 2012

When I approach a child he inspires in me two sentiments:
tenderness for what he is, and respect for what he may become.
-  Louis Pasteur

Unless I have the math wrong (completely possible) (have I told you that I flunked trigonometry?) (really, literally flunked) (I know, I wish I could time travel backwards and swat myself upside the head too), in three months we will be celebrating Charlotte’s third birthday.

Yesterday, she told me that she NEEDED me to play with her, PEAS! PEAS! PEAS! PEAS! PEAS! (please) and so we pulled apart her Legos and spread them all over the floor.  She built a stack that alternated colors on each level and set it in front of me.  “This is the farm,“ she said.  Then she strategically placed pieces all about.  “This is a sheep.  And a farm needs two goats.  This is where they milk the cows.  And Ursli lives here (we love that book, Emilie!).  And here is the compost.“

The compost.

She also tells us “THIS IS A NUISANCE!“ if we try to enforce bedtime or eating green beans or any other thing she isn’t keen on.  And a few days ago, she told me she “screwed up” - reinforcing, once again, that our language is never quite as pristine as we think it is.  And yesterday morning when she woke up, she asked me if I wanted her to sing me a song to start the day.  “Okay,“ I said.  “Okay,“ she said.  “You can sing Big Rock Candy Mountain to me.  Yes.  I will let you.“  So I did.

I know that I have said this a million times, but I am always equally convinced that THIS, this is my absolute favorite age.  Almost three.

** Charlotte is two years and eight months old.

    LOVE!!!

Hannah’s favorite thing lately is to tell me “stories.“  Of course, they are always about things she did: ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A LITTLE GIRL NAME’ HANNAH! AN’ SHE P’AYED IN DA BACK’ARD AN’ RODE HER BIKE AAALLLL AROUN’.  My favorite part is when she gets to something “exciting” happening.  Her eyes get wide and she gets this very serious look on her face and she says, SUNN-EH-WEE! (suddenly…)

    Yup, best.age. :)

Did Donald take this picture? Being a shrimp myself, I have always wondered what his view of the world is.

Just because you mentioned it, you did the math wrong.  July 20, her birthday if I’m not mistaken, is 4 months away.

On another note, my son will be 2 at the end of June and some days I can’t wait for him to be 3 and more engaging and other days, I can’t believe he’s already approaching 2.  We’re having another baby in August and I plan to cherish this baby’s babyhood just a little more, because it goes SO. FAST.

HA!  Ellery, you’re right, it is four months away!

    Sigh.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  How exciting!!

Mitzie - Actually, I took it by raising the camera over my head, but it’s pretty similar to what pictures look like when he takes them.  He does this thing where he goes on his toes and raises his arms up and takes pictures of a room of people and it makes everyone look like ants!  I should post some of them sometimes, it’s kind of cool.

Today my son said, “What the heck do you think you’re doing!“ to his stuffed cat.  It must have been quite an argument.  We have been trying to catch our cursing too, but I guess some of the stuff gets through.

Eeeep..mine turns 3 in less than 2 months!! Yesterday she said to me, “Are you kidding me??“ and then giggled. It was totally out of context, but she thought it was hilarious. This is my favorite age too!

Uh, Sarah. I don’t even know what trigonometry is.
