And I love the yellow bell tomatoes most of all.

If I had to pick one food as my favorite, it would have to be the tomato.  I love tomatoes.  Raw tomatoes, cooked tomatoes, fried tomatoes.  Tomatoes in sauce, tomatoes in macaroni casserole, tomatoes in scrambled eggs.  Tomatoes the size of my daughter’s pinky nail and tomatoes the size of small elephants.  Tomato soup, tomato paste, tomatoes stuffed and baked.

Growing up, my family had plenty of tomatoes and this is where my love of tomatoes began.  You know what they say about true love: it lasts a lifetime.

A typical weekend morning in the kitchen at our house.  Donald’s favorite breakfast is eggs and bacon.  Charlotte’s favorite is still milk, but yogurt with granola is a close second.

My husband does not particularly care for tomatoes unless they’re boiled down with herbs and spread on a pizza or over noodles, but this has done nothing to deter my love affair.  In fact, tomato plants are the part of our backyard homestead that I am looking forward to the most.  Tomatoes in every shape, every size, every color and flavor and texture.  The spring seed catalogs all arrived several weeks ago and I have been pouring over them lustfully ever since.

The only problem now is narrowing down which tomatoes I want to plant and which I simply want to drool over at tomato festivals.

    Oh, I’m with you on the tomatoes… but not just any tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes—the ones where you can still smell the plant on them. That may sound crazy, but there’s a total difference between “just picked,“ “farmers’ markets,“ and “grocery store” tomatoes. Granted, the first two categories taste fresher than the third, but freshly picked? Heaven. We only get them up here for about 1.5-2 months a year. Oh, how I envy you.

    By the way: I have a killer, amazing, lips-smackin’ knock-your-socks-off tomato recipe that is super-easy and that your husband might enjoy too. Let me know if you want it. Promise to wow you. Truly.

    I do not care for tomatoes, but all my years of growing up I kept trying them because I felt I was missing out on something really wonderful.  My mother would grab the salt shaker and go out to the garden and eat them right there in the sunshine with the juice running off her elbows.  I tried them every way I could think of trying to get a little bit of that euphoria.  I never made it.  I am just like Donald.  But I do love to grow them for the juice.  You can’t buy that in a can!!

    We love mushrooms over here… Baked, sauteed, souped, BBQed on a burger. When we’re at my family’s cottage we actually go mushroom picking. Throw Isla in the wrap and hike around in the dewy forest with a basket. We’ve picked some doozies, but only eat the species we’re 100% certain about. Wild mushrooms are fantastic, I want to eat truffles one day too.

    We also love eggs. Soft boiled, saladified on a sandwich, fried, benedict… We’re breakfast people. I especially love my eggs omeleted with mushrooms, tomatoes and some Canadian havarti. Oh man, I’m drooling now…

    Hi Sarah,
    I’d be glad to send you some heirloom tomato seed if you’d like to try germinating your own. I have a few early and disease resistance varieties like Mortgage Lifter, Pink Oxheart, and Hazelfield Farm that you might enjoy.  I also have a few “mutts” that were open pollinated from my own garden that have turned out to produce fantastic fruit. All heirloom, all organic.  I have already germinated my stuff and have tons of seed leftover…it does me no good getting older! Email if interested.

    I will say this—know thy tomatoes. Some germinate and produce early. Others tend to come into season later, but produce through cooler fall temperatures. Some are high acid, others are very mild. Grow what you like to use and eat, and what will produce what you want/need.

    My absolute favorite tomato of all time is the Cherokee Purple! Oh god… makes my mouth water just thinking about them!

    I love the yellow bell tomatoes too!  AND they are SO easy to grow—it’s awesome!  One year we were behind on planting so we just planted the seed straight in the garden and had almost every one come up and produce a ton of fruit—we have even had them volunteer from fruit we let fall off the year before. 

    If you like small mouth size tomatoes (I do!) my favorite so far is the Pink Thai Egg Tomato.  It isn’t as easy to grow as the yellow bells but it has the most awesome flavor ever (at least in my opinion.)  The only way I can describe it is like lemonade in a tomato.  I know that sounds weird but i love tart/sweet things and this tomato was perfect in that regard.  I never ate any in a salad or anything because I couldn’t resist eating them all straight off of my one plant, but I am betting they would make a unique salad tomato—they are about the size of a grape tomato.  I also agree with the above poster, the cherockee purple is another REALLY good one and easy to grow (at least here in NE TX.)

    My all time favorite food is popcorn - and not the kind you make in a microwave. I like to pop it in a little oil over the stove and season it lightly with salt. I could eat it everyday and consider it an acceptable dinner food from time to time!

    My favorite food to grow is a tomoato!!!! There are some wonderful heirloom varieites, and of the heirlooms we’ve tried so far, my husband and my favorite are the big, juicy beefsteak options!!  Mmmmm!
