I am out of commission today.  Yesterday morning, I woke up engorged.  I was unable to pump out the excess milk and Charlotte was unable to adequately drain my supply, so I was engorged all day.  By mid-afternoon, I was dizzy and running a fever.  My breast began to burn and throb.

Around four o’clock, I called Donald in tears and asked him to get his (hot) (sexy) (generally stare-worthy) butt home.  I was so exhausted and swollen and sore that I could hardly lift my baby, so I spent 95% of his ride home in tears on the bathroom floor.  My fever broke shortly after Donald’s homecoming, but Charlotte still has not been able to drain me and I still have not been able to pump.

I have no idea what the problem is - breast infection? plugged duct? thrush? clogged nipple? - but it has not yet cleared up.  Charlotte and I are spending all day in bed (with heaps of toys) (and a few good books) in the hopes that the two of us can resolve the problem together.  Hopefully, I’ll be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by tomorrow!

In the meantime, if you would like your daily dose of Charlotte, please check out this post.  Charlotte’s six-month studio portraits were scheduled over the weekend.  I am in love!

It sounds like a plugged duct that is now mastitis. I’d get yourself to a doctor. Mastitis does not usually clear up on it’s own. You may need antibiotics, and definitely need to clear the plug. Check out this info:
    take care of yourself!

I agree with Lindsay…definitely sounds like mastitis.  I thought I was dying when I had it - twice!  Oh, the wonderful life of an overproducer.  Antibiotics will clear it up quickly.

The pictures of Charlotte are ADORABLE!  I wasn’t going to have studio pictures done at six months, but you’re making me rethink it…

    Feel better soon!

Mastitis.  A friend told me she cleared hers up by nursing (or pumping) on her hands and knees - a bit of an acrobatic feat, but gravity works to help everything drain.  Good luck…feel better soon!

mastitis is on the way for sure. if it hasn’t gone on too long, i had good luck with warm showers and breast massage. like, push HARD…so hard it hurts…you have to get the plugged duct worked out. and keep pumping and nursing…that baby is your biggest hope.

if the fever keeps up, though, call the doc. i had to do the antibiotics once but managed to take care of it on my own the other times. i let it go too long that time and was DEAD for like four days.

    hang in there.

mastitis.  When I had it I wanted to die.  Both times.  The first time the doctor gave me antibiotics the second time she forced me to “work through it”  I swore that if it happened again the breastfeeding was off.

The fever makes me think mastitis, too. It’s misery. I hope you feel better soon.

I am with the rest of them… Mastitis ... get yourself to the doctor quick!

Oh!!  I hope you feel better soon.  I agree with everyone else, it sounds like mastitis.  Yuck.  Get some meds and rest!

Also, her pictures?  Are BEAUTIFUL.  I hope you post all of the ones you get!

Yes you have mastitis! Call your dr and get some meds! Breastfeeding/pumping actually helps though, as painful as it is. Feel better!

Is it odd that I get more information from your blog than I ever have… anywhere… about mommyhood?

Oh my dear, you have mastitis.  Keep nursing her and try to hand express in the warm shower.  Warm moist heat on your breasts will help also.

Hope you get feeling better FAST.

When I had mastitis, I found that a hot water bottle helped a lot. Don’t give up! It’s miserable but I was glad I stuck with it.

Definitely sounds like mastitis!  Call your doc/midwife ASAP to get an antibiotic.  Then get on hands and knees and nurse.  If you can feel where the clogged duct is, get her chin toward the clogged duct.  It’s the only thing that would get me unclogged.  McKenna looked at me weird, but whatever.  Feel better soon!  And LOVE the pictures!  Especially that last one.

You might have the cutest baby ever. And that picture of your husband and Charlotte is the sweetest thing ever! I hope you feel better soon!

Oh no! Hope you feel better soon :)

  20. By on January 27, 2010

Definitely Mastitis!  I’ve had it 3 times, and it feels like a mack truck has run you over.  As far as I know, antibiotics are the only cure (and it can get much worse if untreated).  The good news, is that you will feel better soon after starting the round of antibiotics.  Try nursing her in different positions (it helps the clog).  Good luck!

Ugh! Mastitis is horrible, but usually easily treated with a round of antibiotics. Everything all the others have said, hot showers, lots of nursing and working to get the duct unclogged.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Yet another vote for mastitis:( I had an awesome bout when my little guy was 5 days old and they had me go to the ER because it was the weekend. Friday night in the ER + a 5 day old baby who should NOT be in the hospital + trying to figure out how to breastfeed said 5 day old baby while in a hospital gown and on one of those weird bed that they’ve pushed out into the HALLYWAY = not a fun trip. Mastitis BLOWS. Definitely call the doc and get some antibiotics a.s.a.p. - you’ll start feeling better very quickly. Or at least less like you got hit my a truck and able to care for your babe!

Antibiotics and cabbage leaves - the later will take the heat out of the boobs.  Rest and feed lots - it’s sooooo bad
