Breastfeeding yoga.
May 25, 2011

I posted a link to this photograph on my Facebook page over the weekend, but I am still so impressed by it that I can’t help but post it again.  The human body is amazing.  And.  Just.  Wow.

If you happen to know where original credit is due, I’d appreciate it if you let me know.  A reader (thanks, Greta!) sent me this link where the image is featured on a blog called Fuck Yeah Yoga, but my browser crashes every time I try to click on the original link - so that site seems to be as far back as I can go.

Have you ever seen baby yoga? My husband and I watched an interview on a woman who practices seemingly very dangerous yoga moves on newborns, sometimes swinging two babies at once by their ankles - even over her head. It’s very controversial over here, but in other countries, people pay instructors to do this with their newborns to give them ‘a leg up in the world.‘ It’s pretty interesting.

Yup.  That’s gotta be my favorite picture all week.  I’m just sayin’.

A co-worker just walked by my office and she’s looking at me like, “What the hell are YOU smiling about?“

    If she only knew.

The woman pictured is really fit - if you’ll notice, there’s no obvious sign of having recently given birth.  It takes a fit and healthy body to look that good after having given birth in so recent the past.

i’m a breastfeeding mother and was a gymnast for 13 years (ie i could breastfeed upside down, no problemo) however, am i the only one to find this photo weird and a bit disturbing? i put my son in awkward places for photos (naked on a top of a pumpkin comes to mind) and worry constantly about his future embarassment / hate of what we did to him.  how will this child feel when she / he grows up and realizes this photo went around the world?

I really, really want to like this photo. It is absolutely amazing and her body is killer. But it totally creeps me out!

Amber and Christy - You aren’t the only ones.  A friend of mine shared it on her Facebook and there were one or two people who weren’t really thrilled with it either.

My perspective on it is mostly as, wow, that’s some physical prowess…and also, it’s pretty creative.  I think it’s more an artistic tribute to the capacity of the human body than anything else.

As for what the baby will think…I don’t know.  I suspect that if this were me, I wouldn’t mind as an adult.  If you’re raised in a pro-breastfeeding, not-too-worried-about-nudity home where you know about this photo having been snapped of you, when you’re twenty or thirty you probably wouldn’t care.  I’m not sure how a fifteen-year-old would look at it, though.

Alicia - I think I saw that video too.  I’ve heard of and know several people who practice baby yoga, but it looks nothing like that video.  They mostly just stretch and let their kids hang out mimicking them.  When I’ve done yoga with Charlotte, I usually just let her stretch after me or I help her with simple stretches for a couple minutes, then I let her flip through books while I continue alone.  To me, the video with the woman swinging the kid around is terrifying.

Her body is amazing!!!  The baby is adorable.

It’s a cool picture although I wouldn’t want to be the kid in it.

I wonder what they are sitting on, the greenery looks so soft and luscious.
