Domestic.
March 05, 2012

Donald is holding her in his arms and she is screaming.  It is bedtime, we told her, and she does not want to go to sleep.  She straightens her body, flails her limbs wildly, and fills the bedroom with LOUD.

I joke sometimes that the toddler volume knob has three settings: silent, snoring, and shrieking.  It’s funny because it’s true.

My husband is putting Charlotte in bed tonight, as he has nearly every night since she was ten months old.  “Peux-j’avoir les bisous?” I ask her while she screams.  Can I have some kisses?  She stops screaming, leans forward, kisses me goodnight.  Then the screaming resumes.

“Before you do anything else out there,” Donald asks, “do you mind starting the diapers on the last rinse cycle?”  I tell him sure, no problem, consider it done.  We’re nearly screaming to be heard over Charlotte.  “Thanks,” he says.

I walk out of the bedroom and down the hall.  I take a sip of my water in the kitchen and start the laundry on the rinse cycle.  And the whole time, the sheer domesticity of the moment seems to drape across my shoulders.  I sigh.

But then I stop by the bedroom door on my way to the living room.  I listen as Donald and Charlotte are talking.  He is singing a song to her and then they are bantering and laughing and she is bargaining with him.

I smile and walk away.  It’s not super exciting, but I’ll take this life of mine.  I cannot imagine a happier one.

** Charlotte is two years and seven months old.

This is our life also, could not agree more.  It is what I have always wanted, always hoped for and I will take all parts for better or worse.  <3

As if your husband knows which laundry cycle is needed next (for diapers no less!), and asks YOU to help out! That is awesome! It’s the opposite here… ALWAYS. LOL What a great domestic man you have…
