I could have kissed the toilet, that’s how excited I was.

Guess who went six hours wearing underpants without having a single accident?  And guess who also used sign language to indicate that she needed a toilet AND USED A TOILET TWICE during those six hours?

OMG - you dress Charlotte SO stinkin’ cute!!!  She is so adorable anyway but still…  And congrats on the potty training…impressive :-)

That is pretty amazing!  I can’t even fathom Finnley doing anything like that (she is about 16.5 months).  At this point if I ask Finnley if she is pooping, she smiles…and if I tell her we need to change her diaper, she RUNS away as fast as she can.  I think she is far from ready, ha!

Enjoy the potty training.  I think I’ll be ready for advice on it in about a year!  ; )

LOL, we’re working on potty training Jude as well. I’ve braved the grocery store without diapers and we dont’ use them at all when we’re at home (he pretty much runs around naked). We have our share of accidents, but all in all, it’s going so well.

What are you doing? Anything special other than the sign language?  How have you communicated what you want?  How in the world are you potty training so early????!!!

Kristin - We’re not EXACTLY potty-training yet.  Beginning when Charlotte was two or three months old, I’ve set aside a few hours each week for “Naked Time” so that she can air out from the cloth diapers.  Around the time she began walking, she began to sign for DIRTY whenever she had just had an accident…and she also began mimicking everything we do, including sitting on the ground near the toilet and pulling a couple sheets of toilet paper off the roll and pretending to wipe herself.  She became obsessed with helping me close the door, grab the toilet paper, flush the toilet, wash our hands, etc.  Then she started wanting to put my underwear on instead of her diapers.  By this time, she was also able to sign immediately before she would wet herself during Naked Time, and she could go a couple hours without any incidents at all.  So last week, we went out and I bought her some underwear.  They’re too big for her, but she loves them.  The first time wearing them, she was so excited that she just didn’t have any accidents for six hours.

This morning, she took off her diaper, grabbed her underwear and wanted to put them on.  So we did.  Two minutes later, she had an accident so I asked her if she wanted her diaper back on and she did.

It’s more like I’m just letting her try to mimic us than anything.  I don’t plan to really make a big push for potty-training until she can verbally communicate with us.  Sign language is great, but the problem is that I just don’t always have my eyes on her right when she needs to tell me it’s time.  Plus, she can understand alot, but I think it’s sort of a fluke that she’s figured out the toilet-underwear connection at all since she has accidents more often than not.

Of course, that doesn’t stop me from being proud when it works out!  Less floor scrubbing for Momma!

My Charlotte started using the potty sometimes when she was 17 months old too. She hasn’t shown interest in underwear, but she wants to do what we do and we cheer for her when she uses the potty.

Sometimes she tells us ahead of time. If she pats her crotch area and says “pee” it either means she needs to go or she just did and needs to be changed. :)

They aren’t equipped at daycare to take her to the bathroom (leaving the room short staffed) so I don’t expect her to be fully trained until she moves to the 2 year old room anyway. The 2 year olds are all taken to the bathroom once an hour or something, so I think she’ll get trained very fast once she’s in that environment.

In the meantime, every time she poops in the potty, that’s one less poop we have to clean, and I am very grateful!
