The tricycle.
August 20, 2012

This weekend, we scratched the first big pre-baby project off the list.  Or rather, Donald did.  He built Charlotte’s tricycle:

She loves it every bit as much as you would think, and possibly more.  She milked every possible second of daylight pedaling along the road while Donald watched and helped last night.  It was unbelievably darling.

What did you do this weekend?

That trike is AMAZING! Wow! You have one talented husband. He could sell those. Did Charlotte know how to pedal?

    That is an amazing tricycle!

We were actually teaching Isla how to ride a bike—She’s awesome at it already. Someone in our neighbourhood was throwing it out, we took it in, gave it some love and now Isla gets endless amounts of free joy.

Liz - She had a basic idea because she sees people on bikes (and kids on trikes) pretty frequently, but it took a solid hour of working at it before she started to get the hang of pedaling and steering and watching where she was going all at once.  If it’s anything like the scooter, it’ll be another week of constant use before it really starts to click.  Also, putting the pedals on will probably help! =P

Cynthia - Our neighbor’s grandson started riding a two-wheeler without training wheels at 2.5 years old!  We’ve been so blown away by it that we, too, salvaged an old hand-down bicycle for Charlotte.  We have to give it some love, but hopefully in a month or two it’ll be ready for her.  It would have never occurred to us to give her a bike if we hadn’t seen the other little kid, though.  It’s amazing what kids can do!

Isla is on training wheels… Maybe next year we’ll go for no training wheels, especially since she’ll need a bigger bike next summer. She learned with training wheels so I know she’ll get frustrated if she can’t ride without them. I couldn’t do that to my poor girl, who just discovered her own independent mobility.

We’re going with training wheels too.  Momma needs some peace of mind!

That is the greatest trike ever! I don’t think I would want off of it either!

Beautiful tricycle! Did he have a pattern?

Have you seen a balance bike in action? I highly (highly!!!) recommend over the training wheel route. My daughter (3.5) has had one since last June (http://parenthood.phibian.com/?ID=581) and would have been riding a “proper” bike this spring if only we could find one that fits her admittedly short legs (most trikes too big still!)

But she really zooms on it even without pedals and coasts half a city block at a time.
