There she goes!
April 20, 2010

Every time I set Charlotte down, one of two things happens.  Either she cries until I pick her up again (which I admittedly do not fight - she’s only this little for a short time!) or she immediately crawls off in search of something to bump into and bruise herself with, like a wall or the ground or a table leg or the ground or a tree trunk.  Or the ground.  These days, my love shows up with all sorts of little nicks.

The rational side of my brain is totally cool with this - it means that she’s learning and exploring and discovering the limits of her world.  But the mother in me, the woman who has kissed and memorized every inch of her skin, the woman who huffed and puffed to bring such a lovely girl into this world, is a bit sad when she finds a new scratch.

Love the photo, captures crawling perfectly.  I think it is natural to be sad about new scratches, I feel this way too.  I think we feel heavy responsibility for ALL of them :)!

I feel the same way every time I see anew scratch on Henry’s face.  I try to keep his nails short and his hands are too big for those mitten things so I consider a never-ending battle
